Appeals – Update

The Department of Education has issued guidance for providers about how appeals will be managed during the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.  In the interest of  public health and safety, admission appeals will not be carried out in the usual way.

Appeal Dates & Information

If you have not been offered a place at Meopham School, the law entitles you to appeal against that decision to an Independent Appeal Panel. This panel is completely independent of the school and the Local Authority.

The appeals are held at Meopham School.

Please do not use any other appeal form. Do not send your form to your local authority. Send the appeal form to Lorraine Gaimster:

We recommend that you download the explanatory leaflet about appeals from the school website which you should read before you complete the appeal form.

The appeal form is in Word format. The panel would prefer the form to be typed, but handwritten forms, in black ink, are acceptable. Please ensure that the clerk can read your details including telephone numbers and email addresses. ‘Signatures’ may be typed. You should include any evidence or supporting material with your appeal form and you must give the grounds for your appeal at the time you lodge your appeal form. Your appeal form will not be accepted unless you state the grounds for your appeal. You may appeal for more than one school.

If you decide to send in additional information after you have sent your appeal form, you must provide 5 copies for the panel.

The timetable for appeals is as follows:

Last day for lodging appeal forms for a place in Year 7 to start in September 2020:

By 4pm, Friday 17th April, 2020.

Appeals which are received after this date may not be heard in the first round and may not be heard until September.

You must state the reasons for your appeal and supply any documentary evidence at this stage. Appeal forms and other information may be emailed to Lorraine Gaimster (preferred method) or posted to Lorraine Gaimster, Meopham School, Wrotham Rd, Meopham DA13 0AH

Stage 1 part of the hearing (with other parents present) will take place at the school:

Tuesday 16th June 2020 at 9am.

Stage 2, the individual private hearings, will take place at the school. Due to the high number of appeals, hearings will take place over several days w/b 15th June:

Appeals will start on Tuesday 16th June 2020. You will be informed of the date and time of your appeal.

Invitation letter giving details about your hearing will be sent to the Independent Appeal Panel:

At least 10 school days before the Stage 1 hearing.

Any other additional supporting evidence:

By midday, Tuesday 9th June, 2020.

Please provide 5 copies of any additional supporting evidence. This must be posted to Lorraine Gaimster, Meopham School, Wrotham Rd, Meopham DA13 0AH

Additional paperwork received on the day of the appeal hearing will not be taken into account.

September 2016 Entry – Appeal Information

If your child is due to start secondary school in September 2016 you can appeal between 2 March and 31 March 2016 to guarantee that your appeal is heard by 19 June 2016. Appeals made after this date will be heard within 40 school days of 31 March or 30 school days after being made, whichever is the later date.

 

Appeal hearing
The hearing lets you explain to an independent appeal panel why you think your child should be given a place at the school and lets the school explain why it could not offer your child a place.
Appeal hearings usually take 30 minutes and are held Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm.
We’ll send you the details and a copy of the school’s case at least 10 school days before the hearing. If you want to send us any additional evidence you must make sure that we get it at least 5 school days before the hearing date.
 

Decision
We will write to tell you the panel’s decision as soon as possible. We cannot tell you the decision by telephone.
If your appeal is unsuccessful, you can’t lodge another appeal to the same school for the same school year, unless you can show your circumstances have changed since the first appeal.
