Film and Media

Overview of the Subject

The Media Department at Meopham School has three main aims in respect to the students at A Level:

  • That all learners achieve the highest grade they can in the subject.
  • That all learners experience media production in a practical way in order to give them some insight into the working practices of the industry for potential future employment.
  • That all learners develop the skills to analyse media products so that they are aware of the influence the media has on their lives, particularly social and financial.

To do this, we currently offer GCE Advanced Level Film Studies (which at present can be studied at Advanced Subsidiary Level for one year or as an Advanced Level over two years).

Cinema has been recognised as the dominant art form of the 20th Century and continues to have a major influence and impact on our social, moral and aesthetic development and outlook, whether experienced at the cinema, in the home or via the internet.

Film Studies has been designed to offer a flexible, cohesive and creative approach to the study of film which enables candidates to develop their critical and analytical appreciation of film. It also encourages candidates to explore the institutional nature of film from the point of production to the point of consumption and to develop an understanding and appreciation of the relationships between institution (particularly Hollywood and the British Film Industry) and audience and the impact these relationships have on audience reception, appreciation and consumption.

We actively encourage students to study and appreciate a broad range of both English and non-English language film texts and to examine the multitude of different issues facing contemporary film across the globe. Students are also encouraged to develop a broad contextual understanding of these issues by exploring them from historical, sociological, technological, economic and political perspectives.



The WJEC Film Studies A Level enables students to develop their written and visual creative skills, along with the ability to analyse a range of English and non-English speaking film texts. We encourage pupils to engage with a wide range of film texts created between 1894 and the twenty-first century in preparation for - and support of - the films they will be asked to explore both in the exam and as part of their coursework.


How will I be assessed?

Year One (Advanced Subsidiary Level)

  1. Unit FM1 - Coursework:  20 % (40%of AS) - Internal Assessment

Exploring Film Form through an Analytical Essay and Creative Project with evaluation:

  • An analysis of how the micro aspects of a chosen extract from a film of the student's choice produce meanings and responses (1500 words) [30 marks]
  • A creative project based on a film sequence or short film [40 marks]
  • A reflective analysis on the creative project [10 marks]
  1. Unit FM2 - Exam:  30% (60% of AS) - 2½ hours Written Paper on British and American Film.

Three questions, one from each section:

  • Section A: Response to stimulus material set by Awarding Body based on

producers and audiences of film [40 marks]

  • Section B: Topics in British Film – British Horror Genre. Focus Films: ‘The Descent’ (2005) and ‘Severance’ (2006) [40 marks]
  • Section C: US Film - Comparative study of two films. Focus Films: ‘The Thing from Another World’ (1951) and ‘The Thing’ (1982)[40 marks]


Year Two (Advanced Level)

  1. Unit FM3  – Coursework:  25 % - Internal Assessment

Film Research and Creative Project with evaluation:

  • A small-scale research project [40 marks]
  • A creative project (script or short film/sequence) [45 marks]
  • A reflective analysis [15 marks]


  1. Unit FM4 – Exam:  25 % - 2 ¾ hour Written Paper on Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates

Three questions, one from each section:

  • Section A: World Cinema topics – French New Wave. Focus Films: ‘Breathless’ (1960), ‘The 400 Blows’ (1959), Bande à part (1964) [35 marks]
  • Section B: Spectatorship topics - Popular Film and Emotional Response. Focus Films: ‘Psycho’ (1960), ‘Peeping Tom’ (1960), ‘The Sixth Sense’ (1999), ‘Blue Velvet (1986) [35 marks]
  • Section C: Single Film - Critical Study of ‘Fight Club’ (1999)[30 marks]
