Curriculum Intent for English

At Meopham School, English is a foundation, core subject where students build their confidence and expertise in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our broad and balanced curriculum across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 showcases a diverse range of texts and genres, allowing students to read for understanding, pleasure and information, and then use this reading to inform and develop their own written and spoken language skills.

In English, our purpose is to deliver a challenging curriculum through high quality teaching and learning. All students at the end of Key Stage 4 will have developed and learnt a variety of  skills to enable them to achieve and exceed their expected progress in both GCSE English Language and English Literature. The curriculum is sequenced in such a way that students can use the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout Key Stage 3 successfully to work towards agreed end points at the end of Year 11. 

Students follow the National Curriculum for English to develop:

• an appreciation and love of reading;

• an understanding of challenging texts across genres;

• the ability to critically analyse and evaluate texts, using appropriate subject terminology;

• accurate, fluent and effective writing skills for a range of purposes and audiences;

• the use of Standard English grammar and vocabulary in writing and speech;

• the ability to reflect on and proofread written work in order to make improvements;

• the ability to speak confidently and effectively, through speeches, drama and debate.

Our main aim in English is to empower students to be independent, confident and resilient members of society by giving them the communication tools they need to get the best possible outcomes in life and at work.
