Learning a Modern Foreign Language will help developing your communication skills and your understanding of the global community that we live in. It will also allow you to reflect on how your own language works and how they are often interlinked. We aim, therefore, to provide a well-balanced and structured curriculum delivered in fun, engaging and challenging lessons.
Key Stage pupils have four 50 minute lessons a week of French. Spanish is offered as a taster week in Year 8. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of French in the four language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Part of the curriculum is also focusing on cultural awareness.
French and Spanish can be taken as an option from 9 to be studied until Year 11.
At GCSE, pupils go over previously learned vocabulary and grammar in more depth and are encouraged to manipulate the language more independently. The core content include the following topics:
Pupils are assessed by their ability in four skills. The qualification is now linear which means that pupils will sit all their exams at the end of the course.
The listening and reading skills are assessed by examination and are worth 50% of the course (25% each). The writing skills are assessed by an examination (60 minutes Foundation Tier and 90 minutes Higher Tier) and are worth 25% of the course .There is NO coursework. The speaking skills are assessed in the form of a prepared conversation, role play and a response to a visual stimulus with the class teacher. The recording is assessed by an external examiner and is worth 25% of the course
The examinations are set in two tiers and pupils will be entered for either the higher tier or the foundation tier.
